Exploring options from physics

Autumn arrives and with it thoughts of further options beyond school. IOP Ireland has been planning and exhibiting at careers fairs across Ireland bringing information on courses and careers from physics.

The events kicked off with the recently established School Summit at the National Show Centre which was mainly aimed at Transition Year students and had around 4000 participants. It was swiftly followed by Higher Options at the RDS which had over 25,000 attending where the main focus was on third level courses. Upcoming events include Options West in Galway on 24 Oct, Trinity College Dublin Physics and Maths Society careers event, 25 Oct and the Cavan-Monaghan Careers Fair in November.

The number one question which is asked at these events is ‘what can I do with physics?’ Generally the answer is almost anything but some detailed specifics are outlined in the IOP Ireland publication, 28 Days 28 Physicists. Up-to-date information on physics courses in Ireland is available through this year’s booklet and is always in high demand from students and guidance counsellors.

Probably the most helpful aspect of these events is the opportunity for attendees to talk to the team of IOP volunteers who range from undergraduate students to retirees and who give valuable insight into the world physics beyond school.
