Eight Irish teachers recently took part in the European-wide 2017 Science on Stage festival in Debrecen, Hungary.

The group joined around 450 teachers from 30 countries, who came together to exchange innovative teaching ideas at the event, in workshops and on stage. Science on Stage Europe supports teachers‘ professional development while its overall aim is to encourage more students into science, engineering and IT by increasing the quality of STEM teaching.

The Ireland team, which is co-ordinated by Dr Eilish McLoughlin, Dublin City University and Paul Nugent, Santa Sabina School, Dublin included:

The Ireland team will be sharing their expertise at a number of events during the coming year including at the Frontiers of Physics teachers conference in Limerick on 23 September 2018.

Robert Clarke and Declan Cathcart received highly commended awards at the festival and in a first for Ireland, Paul Nugent, was elected to the executive board of Science on Stage Europe.

Paul has been involved in physics education for over 20 years.  In Ireland, he supports other science teachers through his work with the Institute of Physics in Ireland (IOPI) and the National Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST). He is the Irish National Representative for GIREP-International Research Group on Physics Teaching. Paul is a founding member and leader of the science outreach group- Physics Busking

He is co-chair of the Irish Science on Stage National Steering Committee and has delivered many workshops in Ireland, UK and in Europe.
