High demand for the lowdown on physics

26 September 2014

“Three very intense but satisfying days.” That was the verdict of one of the student volunteers at the Institute of Physics stand at the recent Higher Options event in the RDS.

Higher Options

Around 30,000 students, parents and guidance counselors attended the conference and there was a noticeable surge in requests for information on science in general as well as physics in particular. This reflects the 11% rise in students taking the subject at Leaving Certificate in 2014 compared with last year.

The IOP stand was packed with information on where to study physics and what qualifications in this area can lead to. It was very ably manned by volunteers from Dublin City University, NUI Galway, Maynooth University, Trinity College Dublin and University College Cork who spent much time giving the students a flavour of the various physics degrees on offer.

A common request at the stand was for information on astrophysics and theoretical physics indicating the role that the ‘big questions’ have in driving interest in the subject.
