Physics High Flyers in Dublin

The recent bank holiday weekend saw some of the highest flyers in physics descend on Dublin for an IOP Ireland event at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

The event featured talks from renowned physicists on areas ranging from the discovery of quarks to the mysteries of the universe, and the speakers were also be interviewed in “Physicists in the Chair” sessions by Dr. Tony Scott.

Distinguished Speakers included:

  • 1990 Physics Nobel Prize Winner Jerome Friedman who uncovered the first experimental evidence that protons had an internal structure, later known to be quarks
  • 2011 RDS Irish Times Boyle Medal Winner Margaret Murnane who is an Irish physicist at the very forefront of ultrashort pulsed laser research
  • 2010 Physics Wolf Prize Winner Anton Zeilinger who is a world-renowned pioneer in the field of quantum information and quantum optics
  • 2010 Schawlow Prize Winner Henry Kapteyn whose pioneering work has pushed X-ray source research to the very brink of laser-like technology
  • Cecilia Jarlskog, 2011 President of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics
