Their project was an experimental study of the motion of a falling card which can vary from almost a straight fall to complex fluttering. As well as winning the IOP prize, the project also came second in the Intermediate Group section for chemical, physical and mathematical sciences.

The 16 year old twins, who are taking their GCSEs this year, are students at Loreto College Coleraine a school which has had outstanding success over many years at the competition and indeed this year won the Most Successful School Award, while their teacher, Mr Brian McKenna was given a special award for his contribution to science education.

Speaking after receiving their award, Thomas and Vincent commented that they had been working on the project since early autumn spending most of their evenings and weekends on it, but finding it very intriguing and worthwhile.
