Spring Weekend 2010
Spring Weekend 2010

The Institute of Physics in Ireland’s annual Spring Weekend was held at the Hodson Bay Hotel, Athlone, 26 - 28 March 2010. Titled, ‘the definite particle’, the family friendly event focussed on high energy physics and combined academic talks with a lively social programme including a pub quiz and a boat trip on the Shannon.

The talks were aimed at a general physics audience and contributors included, Dr Steve Myers, Director of Accelerators at CERN ‘On the Inside Track at CERN, ‘Fingerprints of the early universe’, Dr Hiranya Peiris, of University College London and a Century of Particle Physics by Prof. Peter Kalmus, Queen Mary College London.

Reflecting the relaxed mood of the conference, on Sunday morning there was Tony Scott was in conversation with Prof. Alex Montwill as the ‘Physicist in the Chair’. The event concluded with a lively discussion, chaired by Prof. Jocelyn Bell Burnell, on Ireland’s possible membership of CERN and ESO – ‘Definitely maybe – can Ireland afford membership of large scale instruments?’.
