Tyndall 2010 Lecture outline
Physics is essential for the understanding of many phenomena in nature. Oftentimes the importance and fun of physics is buried underneath layers of maths and abstraction. This lecture will endeavour to show physics in action through fun demonstrations – there will be no maths! The lecture will seek to explain many physics concepts by looking at some physics demonstrations and real world applications. Some of the demonstrations can be made from easily available items such as drink cans, spoons, beach balls and metre sticks. Other demonstrations use basic equipment available in most introductory physics laboratories. The basic physics behind each demonstration will be explained. The topics covers include: balance and forces, sound and music, heat, electricity, and optics.
