The winner of the inaugural award of the Rosse Medal for graduate research in Physics is Iris Choi of the Tyndall Institute and University College Cork for her presentation of her work in Quantum Cryptography. The medal commemorates the 3rd Earl of Rosse (Sir William Parsons K.P., P.R.S) and his contributions to science.
Ms Choi, originally from Hong Kong, gave details of her work which seeks to securely encode and transmit information at the quantum level. Second place went to Jonathan Anderson, UCD for work in the field of particle physics. Barry Fitzgerald of the University of Limerick took third place for his presentation on granular matter, while a special award for visual impact was made to Thejesh Bandi of the Cork Institute of Technology for work in the area of quantum optics. Forty eight posters prepared by postgraduates were on display. Ten institutions from across the island of Ireland were represented in the competition.
